Niagara School of Foot Care started in November 2017, due to high demands for trained, foot care nurses in Niagara. The goal of the programs offered at Niagara School of Foot Care, is to meet these increasing demands for trained nurses and PSW’s in the Niagara Region. As requirements to practice as a foot care nurse are changing, such as upgrading skills and knowledge, Niagara School of Foot Care meet this challenges, requirements and have education programs for new and already practicing foot care nurses.
Since 2012, Niagara Mobile Foot Care services, which provides mobile foot care services to private homes/ LTC/ retirement/group home, etc, has grown to a group to a team of 5 nurses and 1 receptionist. Due to increasing demand and need for care, the requirement for a Niagara based education program went into development. Niagara School of Foot Care is the only Niagara based program of its kind, as it is the only program but also has portions (theory) of the program is completed online via live webinar. The online education is best for many nurses as we all live busy lives and saves the nurse or PSW from commuting to class. With having a background in adult education, this has helped to develop the program into modules instead of two large courses basic and advanced. The modules (1-6), which cover the basic and advanced foot care requirements, are completed online via 1 hr webinars on a weekly bases. Module 7 (1 day PSW, 2 day RPN/RN) is competed in class on each other to become familiar with the use of tools and instruments, plus assessment skills. The program is designed to follow and ensure best practice in all aspects of care, which focuses on the prevention of foot related complications and the client centred approach to foot care.
